Chavalit Yongchaiyudh, the 22nd Prime Minister of Thailand, told Ohn Myint, the Chief Minister of the Mon State Government, and a cadre of Mon businessman that Thailand will invest 20 million USD into Burma. The former Thai Prime Minister met with Mon State Government officials and Mon businessman today at the State Government House in Moulmein, the capital of Mon State.

According to Nai Lyi Rot, a businessman from Thailand and an ethnic Mon who came with Mr. Yongchaiyudh, Thailand’s investment is set to address state development in electric power, automobile roads, tourist resorts and hotels, hospitals and agriculture. However, Nai Lyi Rot added that the biggest investment will be for the construction of an airport in Moulmein that would offer direct airfare from Mon State to Thailand.

Mr. Yongchaiyudh and his Thai investment team were invited to Mon State by ethnic Mon businessmen, led by Nai Kao Rot, who work in Thailand.

During the meeting, six groups were established to discuss different issues relating to work development for the future of Mon State, according to Nai Cham Toick, a local Moulmein businessman who participated in the investment discussions.

He said that the Thai delegation visited Mudon Township today to investigate local development opportunities with Mon businessmen.

“They intend to produce jobs for our Mon people through their investment,” said Nai Lyi Rot.
The 20 million USD investment will reach different parts of Burma, according to Mon sources. Mr. Yongchaiyudh and his delegation’s itinerary takes them first to Mon State and later to NayPyiDaw for a visit with President Thein Sein to discuss larger investments that will reach throughout Burma.

Today’s meeting was meant to be an exchange of information and a precursor to a future deal. In the future, two authorities from the Thai and Mon State Governments will sign a MOU agreement to work for state development projects. Thailand will invite members of the Mon State Government and select Mon businessmen to visit Thailand and study the working skills of Burma’s much-developed neighbor.
